Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Postnatal Care
Everything you need to know about independent midwifery care.
What makes independent midwifery care different from NHS care?
There are many reasons why you may choose to book with an independent midwife rather than have NHS care. Having spent most of our careers within the NHS maternity system, we have deep respect for the dedication and skill of our colleagues. It is a service built on providing safe, evidence-based care to a large and diverse population, often under significant pressure. While this approach ensures consistency and safety, it can sometimes mean less time for in-depth, individualised support which is what many families want, need and deserve.
This is where private midwifery can offer something different. You may seek guaranteed continuity of care from the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, meaning your care is more cohesive and holistic. You may value longer, more personalised appointments, where you can have in-depth discussions, ask questions, and feel truly listened to.
Independent care also offers flexibility, with home visits that provide a more relaxed, private setting. Additionally, an independent midwife can guide you through navigating the NHS system, helping you make informed decisions about your care.
This continuity and personal connection with a known and trusted midwife makes a meaningful difference to your experience; one that centres on you and your unique journey.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, we are fully insured to provide both antenatal and postnatal care through the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). We are also registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), ensuring we meet all professional standards to practise and requires our revalidation every 3 years. Our insurance covers all aspects of independent antenatal and postnatal midwifery care.
Can I pay in installments?
We understand that private midwifery care is a significant investment, so we’re happy to offer payment in installments. Please contact us to discuss options.
Which areas do you cover?
We cover an approximate 20-mile radius from Skipton, North Yorkshire, including: Skipton, Ilkley, Otley, Grassington, Settle, Burnley, Clitheroe, Harrogate, Pateley Bridge, Halifax, Keighley, Bradford, and North Leeds. If you’re just outside these areas, please feel free to get in touch as we may still be able to accommodate you.
How does postnatal care work with an independent midwife?
Once you’re discharged from the hospital, or after your NHS midwife finishes care post home birth, simply inform them that you’ve arranged postnatal care with us. We’ll ensure they have our contact details to facilitate a smooth handover of care. We will visit you the day after you’re home (or the day after your home birth) to provide your postnatal care and ensure you feel supported.
How many times will I see you postnatally?
Visits tend to be scheduled as follows: Week 1: daily, Week 2: every 2-3 days, Week 3+4: twice a week, averaging between 12-15 visits in total; however we can adapt this schedule to suit your specific needs and preferences.
Can you help me with breastfeeding support after birth?
Yes, absolutely. We both have extensive experience helping new parents with breastfeeding. We understand that breastfeeding doesn’t always come easily, and we’re here to support you. If challenges arise, it’s important to know that you haven’t failed, it’s just part of the journey. We offer breastfeeding support in your home from birth up to six weeks. This includes troubleshooting, guidance, and baby weighing if needed.
Do you offer postnatal mental health support?
Yes, we offer compassionate support for mental health both during pregnancy and after birth. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or experiencing difficulties, we’re here to listen and help you through it. We can also refer you to additional services if needed to ensure you’re fully supported.
What happens if me or my baby encounter complications postnatally?
If any complexities arise for either yourself or your baby, we will continue to provide you with midwifery care while liaising with NHS specialists (with your consent) to ensure you get the necessary treatment or tests. We work together with other healthcare professionals to ensure you’re fully supported and getting the gold standard of care.
Are you LGBTQ+ friendly?
Yes, absolutely! We welcome everyone, no matter who you are or how you identify. Our care is built on kindness, respect, and inclusivity. We’re here to support you in your unique journey, providing a safe and affirming space throughout your care.
Can my partner or family be involved in my care?
Of course! We understand how important it is for your partner or family to be involved in your care. One of the wonderful things about having an independent midwife is the flexibility we offer. We can easily schedule appointments that fit around your life, ensuring your loved ones can be there to share in the experience and support you along the way. We’re here to make sure your journey feels as comfortable and inclusive as possible.
When should I book your services?
Ideally as soon as possible and preferably before 34 weeks of pregnancy to secure your care and to give us time to schedule an antenatal Zoom call to get to know each other. However, we can take bookings at any time, even once baby has arrived provided we have capacity.
