Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Care

Everything you need to know about independent midwifery care.

There are many reasons why you may choose to book with an independent midwife rather than have NHS care. Having spent most of our careers within the NHS maternity system, we have deep respect for the dedication and skill of our colleagues. It is a service built on providing safe, evidence-based care to a large and diverse population, often under significant pressure. While this approach ensures consistency and safety, it can sometimes mean less time for in-depth, individualised support which is what many families want, need and deserve.

This is where private midwifery can offer something different. You may seek guaranteed continuity of care from the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, meaning your care is more cohesive and holistic. You may value longer, more personalised appointments, where you can have in-depth discussions, ask questions, and feel truly listened to.

Independent care also offers flexibility, with home visits that provide a more relaxed, private setting. Additionally, an independent midwife can guide you through navigating the NHS system, helping you make informed decisions about your care.

This continuity and personal connection with a known and trusted midwife makes a meaningful difference to your experience; one that centres on you and your unique journey.

Yes, we are fully insured to provide both antenatal and postnatal care through the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). We are also registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), ensuring we meet all professional standards to practise and requires our revalidation every 3 years. Our insurance covers all aspects of independent antenatal and postnatal midwifery care.

Yes you can and in fact, we recommend that you do. We work collaboratively with the NHS and will refer and liaise with the NHS (with your consent) if and when required. If you would like to have screening tests such as ultrasound scans and blood tests, we recommend accessing these via your local NHS maternity unit by booking care both with us and the NHS. Alternatively, you may choose to access private ultrasound scans and blood tests and we can signpost you to these services.

Currently, we do not offer care during labour or birth at home. If you are planning a home birth, we recommend booking with NHS midwifery care, who can attend you at home. We’re here for all your antenatal and postnatal care though.

At this time, we are unable to attend births at the hospital. You would need to book NHS care and give birth at the hospital with their midwives. We’re here for all your antenatal and postnatal care though.

We understand that private midwifery care is a significant investment, so we’re happy to offer payment in installments. Please contact us to discuss options.

Once you’re discharged from the hospital, or after your NHS midwife finishes care post home birth, simply inform them that you’ve arranged postnatal care with us. We’ll ensure they have our contact details to facilitate a smooth handover of care. We will visit you the day after you’re home (or the day after your home birth) to provide your postnatal care and ensure you feel supported.

Visits tend to be scheduled as follows: Week 1: daily, Week 2: every 2-3 days, Week 3+4: twice a week, averaging between 12-15 visits in total; however we can adapt this schedule to suit your specific needs and preferences.
